As the Paris 2024 Olympics progress, Indian athletes continue to make headlines with their remarkable performances across various sports. Competing in one of the most prestigious sporting events globally, India has sent a strong contingent of 117 athletes, participating in 69 medal events across 16 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, and shooting.
India has already secured three bronze medals in shooting. Manu Bhaker has been a standout performer, winning two bronze medals. She clinched the first in the women’s 10m air pistol event and partnered with Sarabjot Singh to secure another in the mixed 10m air pistol team event. Swapnil Kusale added to the tally with a bronze in the men’s 50m rifle three positions event.
Indian archers have also displayed strong performances. In the ranking rounds, Dhiraj Bommadevara finished fourth in the men’s individual event, while Ankita Bhakat secured 11th place in the women’s individual event. The Indian women’s recurve team, consisting of Bhakat, Deepika Kumari, and Bhajan Kaur, finished fourth in their ranking round and are set to compete directly in the quarter-finals.
Athletics remains a key area for India, with a 29-member team led by javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, the defending Olympic champion. Chopra, who made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by winning India’s first track and field gold medal, aims to repeat his success in Paris. Other athletes to watch include Hima Das in the women’s 200m and Avinash Sable in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
Indian badminton stars are making significant strides. Lakshya Sen is one match away from reaching the men’s singles final, a historic achievement for Indian badminton. PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, continues her quest for another medal, despite facing tough competition in the women’s singles.
In boxing, Amit Panghal and Lovlina Borgohain are among the prominent names. Borgohain, who won bronze in Tokyo, is competing in the women’s welterweight division, aiming for a higher podium finish this time around. Panghal, a silver medalist at the World Championships, seeks to enhance his reputation with a strong Olympic showing.
Indian wrestlers have also shown their mettle. Vinesh Phogat achieved a significant victory by defeating world champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the 50kg freestyle wrestling event. This win sets her up as a strong contender for a medal.
As of now, India has won three bronze medals, all in shooting.
