Bengal panchayat polls turn ugly as violent clashes claim 6 lives; Trinamool, BJP workers among dead
Ballot boxes were looted at gunpoint on Monday by unidentified people at polling booths in West Bengal’s Murshidabad where Panchayat Election is underway
Violent attacks, voter intimidation and attacks on polling booths were also reported in several locations.
India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) of instigating violence to disrupt voting.
The TMC has denied the charges and said the reports were overblown.
Analysts are calling this the most violent election in the state in recent years.
Local media has reported incidents of a bomb blast outside a voting centre, firing of gun shots and violent clashes between opposing groups outside polling booths.
Five people have been killed in the Indian state of West Bengal amid violent clashes over local body elections, police say.
A total of 10 deaths have been reported so far. Deaths have been reported in Beldanga and Nauda in Murshidabada, Kultaki in South 24 Parganas, Amdanga and Deganga in North 24 Parganas, Santipur and Nakashipara in Nadia, Nandigram in East Midnapore and in North Coochbehar.
“BJP agent was trying to run away with the ballot box, while officers caught hold of him but said to let him go. I just drove people away using my hand, that’s all,” State Minister Rabindra Nath Ghosh , who was caught on camera slapping a BJP supporter
