Ujjain civic body asks shopkeepers to display names & mobile numbers

He announced that a penalty of ₹2,000 will be imposed on violators for the first time and of ₹5,000 if they defy the order for the second time.

The order has prompted a broader political and social debate. Kapil Dev Agarwal, BJP MLA from Muzaffarnagar, defended the directive. “There is nothing wrong with this order. Some establishments use Hindu names while their owners are Muslim. We have no objection to that. The problem arises when they sell non-vegetarian dishes,” Agarwal stated.

Members of the Muslim community view the move as a form of economic marginalisation. Mohammad Irshad, who runs Shri Khatu Shyam Tourist Dhaba in Bijnor, remarked, “The irony is that the order will hurt both communities. My establishment serves pure vegetarian food, and my employees are Hindus. If customers see my name, footfall will decrease, and we will suffer losses regardless of our faith. Business must not be dragged into communal politics.”
